Does solar work and is it worth the cost is a question we receive often. Here is an application where the answer is a resounding YES! to both. As you can see from the photo below we installed in a small vented ridge vent 8-4″ DC powered fans.

We then installed a small 50 watt solar panel and attached the panel to the seams of the standing seam metal roof. There are no roof penetrations and the fans and solar panel are warrantied for 20 years. That’s at least 20 years of effective attic venting for very few pennies!

Recently we were taking a training class so we could be certified for certain manufacturer’s stone coated metal roofing. We were working on a mock up roof, seen below, and were being trained on how to do chimney flashing. We noticed they were using a 3 piece flashing instead of the single unit flashing we use. After the session we asked if we could make the flashing we use so we could see if they would approve it. My son, Paul, and our foreman, Walter, made our flashing. After we installed it the trainer asked “what else do you do that is different?” We showed him a whole variety of specialty flashing. He acknowledged ours were better but that he didn’t know of any metal smiths that had the skill to duplicate our flashing. We were pleased but not surprised.

We recently installed an attic and under roof ventilation system on an unvented asphalt shingle roof. This roof had neither soffitt vents or a vented ridge vent and when it was 96 degrees outside it was 150 degrees in the attic. The challenge was how to vent the roof and attic without the cost of adding soffitt vents. We added our ventilation system over the existing roof, saving our landfills from more asphalt shingles, and saving dollars for our customer. In our next post we will share the incredible results from this amazing automatic natural ventilation system.

In our last post we shared our first version of a self ventilating cool roof that automatically vented the hot air through a custom vented ridge vent and replaced it with cooler air through a custom eave vent.

The photo below shows our latest improvement that not reduced the labor cost but also introduced a thermal break as well as a radiant barrier. This latest improvement not only addresses all 3 ways heat is transferred, it works on any roof style including asphalt shingles.
