The photo below shows our latest improvement that not reduced the labor cost but also introduced a thermal break as well as a radiant barrier. This latest improvement not only addresses all 3 ways heat is transferred, it works on any roof style including asphalt shingles.

First installation of a ventilated roof in Northern Virginia by Alpha Rain Metal Roofing [540-222-1642]

Our first attempt at installing a ventilated standing seam roof worked great but was very expensive and labor intensive. As you can see this prototype started with a bubble foil bubble insulator and then a cumbersome wooden counter batten system Even though it really cooled the interior of this historic renovation on this converted barn it was labor intensive and expensive.

Copper Roof Solution Alpha Rain Metal Roofing [540-222-1642]

In our last post we left you with our challenge on how to install this particular copper roof. As we noted we had a curved convex deck and a curved or convex hip as well as wider panels that our pan machine could make as well as a single lock hand crimped 1″ standing seam application. The solution was pretty simple: we unpacked all of our hand tools from generations gone by and attacked the problem like our tinsmith forefather’s would have.

Here’s the results: these hand made panels are hand formed, hand crimped and curved using a tool similar to the tool used on the male end of downspouts so that the panels are curved to match the deck. Simple right? I believe we have the best craftsmen in Northern Virginia!

Standing Seam Copper Roofs in Charlottesville, Va. [434-207-5560]

We were presented with a unique challenge while installing this standing seam copper roof near Charlottesville, Virginia a while back. This actually was a breezeway porch that connected the guest suite with the main house. The challenge was that it had to match the existing single lock panels on the rest of the house and the panels were 22″ wide. Sense no rollformer can make a single lock panel that wide we had to hand form all the panels. The roof also was convex so all the panels had to be hand crimped. As you can see the hand crafted deck also had convex hips for the final challenge. In our next post we will show you how we overcame these challenges.

Radiant Therma Vent

This system introduces ventilation to the roof and attic. It reflects radiant heat with the use of a radiant barrier and it stops the conduction of heat in the summer and cold in the winter into the attic space.

How it works: the drip edge at the lower edge of the roof has an air gap below it where air can enter. As the air under the roof is heated by the sun, and as hot air rises exiting the vented ridge vent then cooler air is drawn in at the eave. As long as hot air rises (we don’t think a law can be passed to stop that) then this becomes an automatic air ventilation machine. There is a Styrofoam panel with grooves in it to enhance the air movement and to create a thermal break where cold or heat cannot be conducted into the house.

The home above is located in Charlottesville, Virginia and you can see how the panels are being installed right on top of the foam panel. The radiant barrier is under the panel and the air pathway is under the panel as well.

Everything You Need to Know About Snowbirds

I noticed we don’t have any information about snowbirds on our website. Since we just had about 16″ of snow this seams to be a relevant topic. Why do we need snowbirds? After it snows 6″ or more metal roofs will generally release the snow in a sheet of ice on the first sunny day and anything under this avalanche is in jeopardy.

If there were more snow it generally slides off in one huge mass. There are two styles of snowbirds pictured below.

Both the red and green snowbirds are powder coated the color of the roof metal. Painted snowbirds only take a few snows before the freezing action of the snow pulls all of the paint off. The snowbird on the right is made of bronze and used on copper roofs. All these snowbirds are attached with two set screws on the standing seam metal roof so as to not penetrate or mar the metal or paint.
